Thumbnail Forms Sudden Ladder

The left thumbnail lengthens overnight into a miniature ladder. Its rungs catch the morning light in precise intervals. At noon the ladder touches the linoleum. A line of silverfish emerges from beneath the baseboard. They climb without hurry, each one balancing a single crumb the color of old brick on its back. The final silverfish pauses at the top rung before stepping onto the nail.
