The mailbox on the corner opened its slot at noon. Out fluttered three postcards, each addressed to no one, showing a bright blue bicycle balanced on a tightrope above a field of red poppies. A man in a gray coat reached for one. It slipped through his fingers and landed in a puddle, where the image began to ripple as if the bicycle were pedaling away.
